Brick Floors

Reclaimed brick floors

There is something warm and inviting about brick. People have been using it as a building material for 7000 years, and while it has sometimes waned in popularity, it has always been a favorite stand-by. Maybe it’s the color or variegated texture. It might be the cost-effectiveness of the material. Brick pavers are durable and weather-resistant, able to last for decades without much upkeep. They are easy to keep clean, too. This makes them good for floors in particular, and in fact you can find farmhouse from the 1920’s with brick floors even now. So, if you are considering remodeling but don’t know where to put reclaimed brick floors, consider the following brick flooring ideas.

Around Fires

Of particular importance to our forebears was fireproofing, since places were lighted with open flames before electrical lighting became widespread. This was part of what made it a popular material for buildings to the Romans and practically everyone else. You can spread it in a radial pattern around a fireplace. It’s a safe, slip-resistant type of flooring for kitchens and bathrooms, too. It resists grease fires and heat damage from pans that might fall on it.

As far as looks go, it is an excellent backdrop for Colonial or French Country decor in your living room, especially if you have a traditional-looking mantel.

Accents

You don’t have to make the entire room out of brick. It’s a great way to accent the kitchen, with a square of brick blending into the wooden floor from under the oven or kitchen island. Brick pavers can make an interesting pattern in hallways and entrances. It can make a nice border that will make an ordinary floor pop.

Places in Need of Insulation

Another consideration is that brick can keep an even temperature all the year round. Instead of freezing your bare feet in the winter, it will keep you comfortable. This makes it great for bedrooms and bath rooms. They are good insulation for living rooms, too.

Stairs

Brick texture can make them slip-resistant, which makes them a safe choice stairs. Not just outside, either. They make a fine transition between floors and into sunken basements. The brick can make the carpet on floors stand out and give a twist to traditional interior decoration.

In Between Places

Some rooms are neither in the house nor out. Mud rooms, porches, entrance halls and basements have the roughness of the great outdoors, but have a roof over them. Brick floors are a great way of covering these areas. Their ease of maintenance make them ideal for rooms where we constantly drag in mud. Brick floors can be a path from the garden into the house making the connection between the house and surroundings seamless.

Outside Rooms

Possibly one of the best uses for reclaimed brick floors is in a greenhouse or sun room. Its durability make it a good material for a room full of plants and where people spend their time gardening. Greenhouses get dirt all over the floors, so easy clean up is good for such rooms. It makes sense aesthetically, too. It looks natural and ruggedly charming, which are good looks for greenhouses and sun rooms.

The array of types of reclaimed brick and the patterns you can lay them in means that whatever floor you choose to cover in brick can match what ever the room. Your look will always be unique, and the space always suitable.
