Reclaimed Brick Matching for Historic Walls

Preserving history, one wall at a time.

Matching historic brickwork is as much craftsmanship as it is material science. Whether you’re planning an addition to a historic home, repairing an existing masonry wall, or building a new wall that needs to blend seamlessly with original brickwork, Historical Bricks specializes in authentic reclaimed brick for wall applications.

We generally work with genuine antique building bricks salvaged from structures built prior to 1920. These bricks offer the color variation, surface texture, and proportions that modern bricks—even those marketed as “antique” or “distressed”—simply cannot replicate. That said sometimes a newly manufactured brick is the answer and we work with specialty manufacturers to custom make matches for large projects.

Our Specialty: Large Quantities

Historical Bricks focuses on projects that require larger quantities of reclaimed brick for wall construction, where consistency and historic character matter most. To maintain quality and manage inventory effectively, our materials are sold in full pallet quantities.

  • Minimum order: Full pallets only (typically 500 bricks)
  • Ideal projects: Additions, exterior walls, façades, garden walls, and large interior masonry features
  • Material age: Early 1900s back to the 1700s

Working in full pallets allows for better color consistency, more accurate matching, and smoother logistics on larger wall projects.

How Brick Matching Works

Historic bricks were not standardized. Size, color, and surface texture can vary widely depending on region, clay source, and firing methods. A successful match looks beyond color alone and considers:

  • Brick dimensions and thickness
  • Color range and natural variation
  • Surface texture and kiln firing marks
  • Overall character of the existing wall

Rather than forcing a perfect replica, our approach aims for a convincing, historically appropriate blend that feels natural within the existing masonry.

Matching Other Historic Materials

In addition to wall brick, we also assist with limited matching for other reclaimed materials, including:

  • Clinker brick: Irregular, over-fired bricks commonly found in early 20th-century architecture
  • Historic paving materials: Antique brick pavers and granite cobblestone for coordinated exterior work

Availability is limited, and projects are best suited to larger quantities where historic consistency matters.

Looking for a Small Quantity?

For small repairs—such as replacing a few bricks in a wall or chimney—local sources are often the best option. We recommend:

  • Photo identification: Use clear, well-lit photos with tools like Google Lens to identify similar historic brick types
  • Stamped bricks: If your brick includes a manufacturer’s mark or “frog,” the International Brick Collectors Association offers valuable historical reference material
  • Local salvage yards: Regional masonry suppliers often carry reclaimed brick made from the same local clay sources as your original structure

Planning a Larger Wall Project?

If your project requires reclaimed brick at scale, we can help you select material that complements your existing masonry while respecting its historic character.

Common applications include:

  • Home additions and extensions
  • Exterior walls and façades
  • Garden and landscape walls
  • Interior feature and accent walls
